Health Inspector Charles Askew was attempting to post a condemnation sign on a house that was declared unfit for human habitation. Two other inspectors were with Askew who were also assaulted. The owner had a long history of non-compliance with the health inspectors during previous visits. The perpetrator, Oscar McCarley, came out of the house and fired multiple rounds. McCarley operated a small grocery store on the property that had been condemned by the city due to unsanitary conditions. McCarley said that he has no regrets and that he intentionally killed Charles Askew. Weapon used was a .38 caliber revolver. Disposition: Sentenced to 99 years in prison.
