Murder

H.J. Willis

While guarding the pound Willis was ambushed and shot by a resident named Berry Bird. After being shot Willis was beaten with a club and his body was mutilated. Investigators discovered there were several other men with Berry who were planning to break into the pound to forcibly release animals that had been seized. When Willis confronted the men he was brutally murdered. The suspects were tried for manslaughter but were acquitted due to lack of witnesses common for the time.
