Sacramento County, CA
November 28, 2012
Murder

Roy was a 14 year veteran with Sacramento County Animal Care & Control. He was asked to assist bank officials and deputies to evict a hoarder in Galt. No animals were visible, but as Roy was standing at the front door to knock, the property owner who was being evicted fired one round through the front door, striking Officer Marcum. This led to a standoff with swat team before the suspect was arrested. Roy was not armed nor did he have body armor. The murderer has since died in prison. Roy leaves behind a wife and four children. His director stated, "He was a guy who loved animals, loved people, and was well-liked by all the staff and the communities he served. He exemplified the true meaning of an animal control officer."
